Message Been trying to find the source of a warbly/rough idle forever. Despite using a boost leak tester, I could never find it listening for leaks. So after doing a little research, I fabbed up a DIY smoke machine and hooked it up to the tester.

Worked like a charm.

I was able to pinpoint the cause coming from the accordion hose under the top intercooler hose and "j" pipe, even though on visual inspection from the top of the car it appeared to be connected securely. But the smoke don't lie, so after I painstakingly removed it (got to be one of the worst jobs to do on the Z considering all the hoses that have to be disconnected to get to it and the incredibly tight space to fit it in and out) I discovered where the leak was. The underside of the hose lip had been bent/smashed on the connecting pipe.

Amazing my car has run as well as it has considering the leak and blocked air flow. Sigh. I've never removed that hose before so hard telling how long it's been like that. My guess is a shop back in 2003 did it when a blown turbo was replaced before I started wrenching on the car myself.

Got a used hose from a member on here cause I knew there was no way the old one was going to go back in to shape. I put it on yesterday, but I haven't started the car yet since it's jacked up and partially disassembled for some other "off season" maintenance work, but am anxious to hear how it sounds when I do.
